Fishing in the Algarve

Here are some examples of the type of fishing trips available to you in the Algarve from the avid fisherman to a family day out with some fishing throne in.

3 Hour Deep Sea Fishing Trip - Leaving Vilamoura Marina, west along the coast to the fishing grounds of the western Algarve.

7 Hour Family Day Fishing - 10.00h to 17.00h - Leaving Vilamoura Marina, you head west along the coast to the Benagil area coast line. A barbecue lunch is included either on the boat or on the beach (depending on sea conditions). Lunch consists of pork steaks, sardines, salad, bread, wine, soft drinks and fruit. Time for fishing or just relaxing, passing beaches, cliffs, rock formations, and when possible a trip to the caves with the dingy.

So what can I catch?

Deep Sea Fishing

Depending on the time of year, this part of the eastern atlantic offers a huge variety of species and methods of fishing.

Just to whet your appetite, with the right methods and tackle, you could be in for a chance of: Blue & White Marlin, several Tuna species, Shark, Dorado, Conger, Bream, Corvina to name a few...

Blue Marlin

Blue Marlin

The blue marlin is a real ocean wanderer, ranging widely through all the worlds great oceans. These fish grow very big, the atlantic record being about 1400lbs. A true apex predator, they follow the bait fish around the worlds currents.

Blue Marlin Fishing Method. Heavy tackle and fast trolled marlin lures are the normal method, although some anglers have success with trolled live and dead baits. Fish over 1000lbs have been taken on the Algarve coast, on one boat they hooked up and fought an estimated 800lb fish for four hours. Whilst it is possible to fish stand up for blue marlin, the fish here can run very big, so most of the time it is recommend that at least 80lb tackle which is designed to be used from a fighting chair. Some boats here have a fighting chair and bucket harness allowing much more pressure to be put on the fish. The idea is to tire the fish quickly, so it can safely be tagged and released, if the fight is too long the fish risks dying from exhaustion. However, a sizable blue marlin can take upwards of 2 hours to beat, and I guarantee the angler will be as tired as the fish.

Blue marlin are found in "blue" offshore water, on the Algarve coast this is usually found a minimum of 10 miles offshore, although some fish have been caught in much closer.

Season for Blue Marlin. Blue marlin normally appear around August with the season running into October according to water temperature.

White Marlin

White Marlin

Unlike the blue marlin, the white marlin hunts in small packs, so if you can find them, multiple hook up's are not only possible but quite common. They are confined to the atlantic ocean, and grow to about 140lbs max, although 90lbs would be a very nice size.

A pack of white marlin going for the lures is really something to see, multiple hookups occur regularly, keeping them on the hook is another matter entirely. White marlin fishing has been described as "trying to hook a pair of chopsticks doing 40mph" sounds about right.
White Marlin Fishing Method. When its good, the white marlin fishing on the Algarve coast is as good as anywhere in the world. Fast trolled small fish or artificial's on 20lbs - 30lbs tackle would be the normal method, although this year some boats are looking to target a few on saltwater fly fishing tackle. A few experienced anglers have trolled lures using 16lb class rods, not to be recommended for beginners, but what a fight. These fish go airborne the moment they are hooked, must be a natural reaction when they feel threatened. The aerobatics can be awesome, tail walking, leaping, all sorts of aerial manoeuvres, fantastic to see.

The best caught so far is about 120lbs, although a good fish would be 70lbs or more.
Season

White marlin normally appear around August with the season running into October but this does depend on the water temperature.
